Looking for a simple and effective Spanish activity to kick off the school year? “A mí también” is a fun and low-prep icebreaker that helps build classroom community while supporting language acquisition from day one. It’s perfect for the first week of schoo, and easy to revisit throughout the year!
This activity is adapted from the Responsive Classroom game “Just Like Me,” and it helps students connect through shared interests while getting lots of exposure to high-frequency language in context.
How to Play “A mí también” in the Spanish Classroom
Materials:
Blank index cards or paper
Markers or pencils
A small container or bucket
Steps:
- Student Reflection:
Give each student a blank card and ask them to write or draw one or two things they like. (Make sure they write their name on the card.) - Introduce the Phrase “A mí también”:
This phrase means “Me too” in Spanish. Practice saying it together with a gesture—like raising your hand or jumping in place. - Read and React:
Place all the cards in a container. One by one, draw a card and read it aloud. For example:
“A Alina le gustan las manzanas.”
Any student who also likes apples responds, “¡A mí también!” and performs a movement, such as jumping, dancing, or raising their hand. - Extend the Conversation:
Ask follow-up questions like:
“¿Te gustan las manzanas rojas o verdes?”
This encourages more language use and keeps the activity dynamic. - Repeat or Revisit:
Continue until you’ve read all the cards or as long as time allows. You can reuse the cards as a warm-up activity in future lessons. - Why This Activity Works
This Spanish activity works because it supports language acquisition through repetition and meaningful context, helping students internalize key phrases naturally. It also builds a strong sense of class community by encouraging personal connections through shared interests. Versatile and engaging, it’s suitable for a wide range of grade levels—from elementary to middle school—and it’s effective not just during the first weeks of school but all year long.

Thank you, Carolina. Your ideas are always so helpful! I teach a Spanish club in an elementary school in the UK, and I know my students will enjoy this, and it will get them speaking Spanish during our first session back. Gracias! 😊
Hi Anne, thanks for reading my blog! Let me know how it goes. ¡Con gusto!
