💚The video is an example of what I do with my younger students. We all dance each time they sing their name. I teach both in-person and virtual classes, and many of my students seem to enjoy it. I love my elementary students!

🐻February 21st is International Save Bears Day. 🐻February 21st is International Save Bears Day. This day seeks to raise awareness to protect these beautiful animals. The National Park Service of Colombia has made this day “El día del oso de anteojos” (spectacled bear), in order to raise awareness in the country. El oso de anteojos is also known as the “oso andino.” It is found in the Andean nations of Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Perú.

🐻 The spectacled bear is the only bear in South America. It’s vegetarian, too. It’s an endangered species due to habitat loss and pressure from us humans.

🐻 Make sure to post on your different social media outlets your pictures using the hashtag #PonteLosAnteojosPorLaVida.

¡Gracias a mi amiga Oxana de @Teachersclipart por su talento y a Alejo por su voz!

💚This year I decided to take a different approa 💚This year I decided to take a different approach on Valentine’s Day and focus on activities for the Random Acts of Kindness Week, which by the way should not be limited to just one week.

💚I used a short clip with some of my classes as the basis for conversation. Just like many world language teachers do with clip talks/chats, I wrote a script based on the story and pre-taught some of the vocabulary using tools such as Quizlet and WordWall which, by the way, my students love because it gives them different possibilities to practice words at their own pace without the pressure of competing with other peers. I love it too!

💚Going back to the video, I didn’t do a lot of extension activities this time, but as a closing activity, we brainstormed some acts of kindness that later were used in the craft. Each child chose a word, wrote on the cover of a paper heart, and inside wrote their name and a sentence explaining why they chose that word. Some of the children shared their words and read their sentences to the class. I was surprised to see that many of them wanted to share. My home learning students also got to participate through an activity on Seesaw, and the results were beautiful!

💚This is a simple idea to help bring the topic of kindness to a world language class. I placed their actos de bondad on a bulletin board that is currently in one of the classrooms where I teach. These letters and activities are available on my TpT store if interested.

💚Stop by my blog to read more! Please find link in my bio.

My mamá loves getting calls from my students! We call her to ask her about the weather in Cali, Colombia or just to talk with her. My students love it! This is a group of third graders talking with her. Go to the next slide to see part of the video👉🏼

I realized that I rarely introduce myself here, so I realized that I rarely introduce myself here, so here is a little about me. 💚

🌼My name is Carolina, and I am an elementary Spanish teacher in a private school in Austin, Texas. I am from Colombia and have been living in the United States for almost 20 years.

🌼 I am a proud Colombian immigrant! 🇨🇴I am married to a “gringo” (It's with love!) who is completely fluent in Spanish and sometimes knows more about Colombia than I do. We have two children 🧑🏼👧🏼 and two doggies 🐶🐶. We are raising them all in a bilingual household, between arepas, salsa music, vallenatos, and cumbias.

🌼 I have been teaching since my teen years, so that means that I have been in this field for a while 🍎. I love teaching with all my ❤️, even with the ups and downs! I consider myself lucky that I get to teach my language and culture, and I truly admire teachers whose first language is not Spanish because teaching a language is not an easy task! I am always inspired by all their passion for teaching Spanish.

🌼 This year I have been teaching on Zoom and in person. I have a small group of students who are doing home learning. I'm one of the lucky teachers who gets to see them! I know this year has been challenging for every single teacher on the planet, and I am not going to say that it has been easy for me, but I'm really enjoying this school year and I know it's because I decided to take it one day at a time! ¡Un día a la vez!

How is your school year? How are you teaching these days? I look forward to connecting and learning from many of you!

💚 In my kinder and first grade classes we have 💚 In my kinder and first grade classes we have been talking about how unique we all are! The book "All the Colors We Are" has been a great way to start the conversation. The children loved learning about the magic power we all have called melanin and how we get our skin color from the sun, our family, and our ancestors. For some reason, my kinders love saying the word "melanina" a lot. We talked about our skin color, hair, and eyes. I also read a short resource I created called "Me gusta como soy." My students and I got inspired to make a song to say  "Me gustan mis ojos, me gusta mi nariz, me gusta mi boca, me gusta mi pelo, me gusta mi color de piel."

💚 We put together mini-books using multicultural crayons and other colors. I wish I had a place to display their beautiful work this year, but for now, I plan to take pictures of their work and upload them to Seesaw for my students to share with their parents. My home learning students worked directly in Seesaw. I will be sharing more about this project on my blog if you want to learn more about it!

By the way, the ornament in the picture was made by a student of mine. A good reminder of love! 💚💚💚

💚Students across several grades at the school w 💚Students across several grades at the school where I teach have read the book “Your Name is a Song” by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow, and I have seen it frequently in the library. I have always loved the title of this book and decided to read it myself and find ways to incorporate it in class. I’m sure what I’m sharing here is not new and that many teachers inspired by the title of this book have asked their students to create songs with their names. I have used this activity with grades K through 5, and, to my pleasant surprise, the upper elementary students really enjoy singing their names.

💚 I never change my students’ names in Spanish class for various reasons: (1) I want them to be respectful of other people’s names and not using them as something they can appropriate; (2) I love hearing my students say their names; and (3 because our names are part of who we are!

💚I have been using a simple activity where I choose a student volunteers, and, as a group, we ask the question in the picture using some American Sign Language (ASL) from YouTube tutorials. Please stop by my blog to learn more about this activity. Link in my bio.

☃️If you are looking for games that work in an ☃️If you are looking for games that work in any setting, either virtually or in person, then this is the right game for you and your students! And it’s free! I have played this game with different age groups, and it’s always a success!

☃️You will need to print the cards or project the slide on the board. I have blogged about this game before, but I can tell you quickly that anytime you show a card, read it aloud to your students or ask a volunteer to read it for you. Students who identify with that card can raise their hands or jump saying “A mí también”, then you stop and ask a few students questions about the card.

☃️Please see link in bio to download the game! ❄️❄️❄️

💚Down memory lane! Salón 111 was one of the m 💚Down memory lane! Salón 111 was one of the most beautiful experiences I have had as a teacher in the United States. That was my first year in this country, and I got to be a building substitute teacher in a public school in Boston. That same year I spent my last 4 months as a first-grade homeroom teacher in a transitional bilingual program in one of the most diverse towns next to Boston.

💚As a new immigrant, going to that town every morning was so refreshing because I got to feel like I was back home every day.

💚I have so many memories of Salón 111 in my heart. My students in that room and I shared similar experiences, we were all new to this country and learning to navigate the system. I do have to acknowledge that I am a privileged immigrant as I understand many of them had to leave their country running away from different factors.  I chose to move to the United States, but for some of them that wasn’t a choice, they had to leave their homes. Looking at this picture brings a lot of joy to my heart, and I wish I could reconnect with them.

On another note, these pictures make me feel so old! Just take a look at the date on the whiteboard! 🙄

I love how, thanks to @syncreticpress , I’m adding authentic books to my library. I can’t wait to share them with my students. Syncretic Press not only carries titles in Spanish and English, but in other different languages such as Zapotec, Galician, and Mapuche, too.
